In the video below, my colleague Ana Boria tells the story of Blackberry
-
It was a very innovative company that came to dominate telecommunications thanks to its technology and devices, but progress ran over it.
Before the absolute dominance of the format imposed by smartphones with a full screen and no space for the keys, Nokia was the leader in half the world . Blackberry was in the other half. Its phones, with a reliable QWERTY keyboard and the latest technology, were synonymous with quality, even status.
Not only did public figures have a Blackberry, but its use in business environments was practically mandatory at certain levels, and the company managed to make its models desirable to the general public . In this area, they had a very special model: the Blackberry Pearl 8100. It was something similar to what happens today with the iPhone, but beyond ‘showing off’, having a Blackberry allowed access to a free instant messaging service between its users.
At a time when texting still cost money (unless included in the plan) and was not as immediate as chat, Blackberry Messenger established itself as a kind of Microsoft Messenger for talking to friends and family. In 2009, everyone wanted a Blackberry phone and they dominated the market with almost 21% share.
However, nothing lasts forever, and as soon as the iPhone and Android phones became popular, the company’s sales plummeted. The reason for its success was that physical keyboard that no longer made sense and which the brand tried to cling to without success , even trying hybrid alternatives and systems like BlackBerry 10 to compete against Android. Spoiler : they didn’t work out.
And that’s just the tip of the Blackberry iceberg, a story that my colleague Ana Boria tells perfectly in the video that we leave at the top of this article, with the perfect storm that led to the resounding fall of the legendary Blackberry.
Although… well, it’s not like so many other companies that disappeared without a trace. Even though their attempts to return to the mobile segment didn’t work, at least they managed to reinvent themselves in other fields. And it seems that things are going pretty well for them .
